Purpose
The Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Care: Facilitate Change, Improve Outcomes aims to enable the learner to develop and advance Motivational Interviewing (MI) proficiency in the application of this approach in their daily clinical practice, through a highly experiential and interactive workshop.
Objectives
Upon completion of this learning activity, you will be able to:
- Differentiate the fundamental elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and current communication practices
- Facilitate patient engagement with Open Questions and Reflections
- Maintain focused conversations through collaboration with patients in clinical scenarios
- Cultivate patient change language in clinical scenarios
- Utilize evoking Influencers (Affirm, Collaborate, Emphasize autonomy [ACE]) in patient conversations
- Assess patient readiness for planning
- Plan change goals with patients
- Manage resistance with a collaborative and forward-focused approach
- Integrate MI skills in clinical practice
Target Audience
This activity is designed for multidisciplinary patient-facing staff, including nurses, advanced practice providers, physical therapists, social workers, and other health care professionals who care for persons with bleeding and other coagulation disorders and have practiced for at least six (6) months.
Continuing Education
In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by University of Nebraska Medical Center and Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education Program. University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
ANCC credits will be offered.
Note: Additional credits (e.g., ASWB ACE or others) may be offered. Final credit types will be determined to align with the roles of program registrants.
Eligibility Criteria
To attend this program, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be employed at a U.S. federally recognized HTC as a physical therapist for at least six (6) months
- Obtain approval to attend from Regional Administrator via automated process upon submission of application.
Cost and Travel Information
There is no registration fee to attend Motivational Interviewing.
Program costs are covered by an unrestricted educational grant from Shire.
Travel and lodging are paid for by a generous contribution from the Indiana Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center, Inc. Once registered, you will be contacted approximately 4 weeks before the program with instructions on scheduling your flight or rental car.
