Sickle Cell Disease CE Activities Released! March 2019

PartnersPRN releases a series of three continuing education activities on Sickle Cell Disease: Comprehensive Care of Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease, Hydroxyurea for the Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease, and Best Transition Practices for Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease. The activities are intended for Nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers who treat persons with sickle cell disease and wish to improve outcomes associated with care for these persons. Dr. Emily Riehm Meier, Pediatric Hematologist and Director of Sickle Cell Research at the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center, Inc., is the faculty for the modules.

All modules are offered free of charge and carry ANCC contact hours and AAPA Category 1 CME Credit!

Transitions: Hemophilia Care Over a Lifetime – 1.0 Contact Hour

This module defines the goals and process of transitioning. It then systematically outlines the barriers to successful transition and categorizes these barriers as being related to the patient, family, healthcare system, culture, or mental health/substance abuse. To overcome those barriers, the module describes interventions that support positive transition. Finally, the module lists resources including NHF transition guidelines and Healthy People 2020 Guidelines.

 Psychosocial Considerations for Parents, Children and Pre-adolescents in Bleeding Disorder Care – 1.0 Contact Hour 

This module examines the developmental stages of childhood, including infancy through the pre-adolescent years and how those stages might influence parenting a child with hemophilia.  It also explores the various environmental factors/life domains influencing the psychosocial health of a child and a family living with hemophilia and provides practical assessment strategies and interventions to utilize in the Hemophilia Treatment Center environment.

Psychosocial Considerations of Aging with a Bleeding Disorder – 1.0 Contact Hour

This module will define the role of the social worker as the psychosocial professional who is an integral member of the comprehensive care team. General information will be provided regarding aging and complications of aging when living with a chronic condition. Exploration of the historical factors that have a significant influence on aging adults in the hemophilia community, psychosocial factors of aging in the general population, as well as within the bleeding disorders community will be assessed.

Additionally, it will address various life domains, which impact the quality of life for those who are living with hemophilia. These include: pain management, cognitive and physical abilities, employment, health care coverage and finances, living environment, social support and individual social skills. Finally, it will address practical strategies for the social work professional to utilize in the hemophilia treatment center environment.

Fantastic New CE Opportunity on Genetics!

PartnersPRN presents Genetics and Bleeding Disorders: Expanding Nurses’ Proficiency a complementary CE activity provided by the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education and the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Program Overview

As part of the management team at HTCs, nurses frequently spend more time with patients on an ongoing basis than any other specialist on the team, providing an opportunity to increase patients’ and families’ understanding of bleeding disorders. Although nurses are frequently involved in discussions concerning the implications of the genetics of a bleeding disorder with patients or family members, they are often not adequately educated about the science behind these disorders.

This activity begins with Dr. Barbara Konkle’s (Puget Sound Blood Center) presentation Genetics of Bleeding Disorders. Michelle Alabek, MS, CGC (Hemophilia Center of Western Pennsylvania) follows with Discussing the Genetics of a Bleeding Disorder. Jennifer Maahs, PNP (Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center) closes the activity with Case Studies Review.

Target Audience

The intended learners for this activity are nurses who are involved in the management of individuals with hemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to increase knowledge related to the genetics of bleeding disorders and to familiarize participants with typical information reviewed with patients (with bleeding disorders) by genetic counselors.

Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:

Summarize the underlying genetic basis for hemophilia and other, less common congenital bleeding disorders

Outline several ways in which a congenital bleeding disorder can impact family planning and pregnancy care

Announcing the Latest Complimentary CE Activity!

PartnersPRN is proud to present Managing Patients with Hemophilia with Inhibitors: Challenging Cases provided by the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education and the National Hemophilia Foundation.

This activity was held in conjunction with the National Hemophilia Foundation’s 65^th Annual Meeting held October 2013. Three case studies involving patients with hemophilia with inhibitors are presented.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for nurses interested in the treatment and care of patients with hemophilia with inhibitors. Healthcare professionals treating such patients must stay abreast of recent clinical research and best practices among their peers in order to provide their patients with appropriate evidenced-based treatment.

Purpose

The purpose of this activity is to enable the learner to develop deep understanding of the etiology, treatment, and management of complex cases of hemophilia involving inhibitors that will enhance the nurses’ ability to advocate for, manage, and educate patients.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be better able to:

• Summarize the additional challenges encountered in the medical care of patients with hemophilia with inhibitors that create a critical need for healthcare professional to provide optimal care to these patients
• Outline the responsibilities of nurses and physicians within an HTC in the management of patients with hemophilia
