New Partners Module Explores Home Treatment Logs

The Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education Program is pleased to announce the launch of a new online learning module Accounting for Home Care: The Role of Treatment Logs in Bleeding Disorders Self-Management.

Healthcare providers who complete the activity will learn about the important role of log-keeping for the home treatment of hemophilia patients; the different type logs available along with their respective features; and patient/provider viewpoints on the use of such tools. The clinical and research application of treatment logs will also be covered in this module.

The target audience for this activity includes nurses, nurse practitioners, and other multidisciplinary hemophilia treatment center staff engaged in the care of persons with bleeding disorders who utilize home treatment to manage or prevent bleeding episodes.

Hemophilia in History: A Two-part CE Activity | June 2020

PartnersPRN announces the release of two new modules that focus on the history of hemophilia.

Hemophilia in History I: Early Accounts and Interventions includes discussion of the historical figures and events in early conceptions of hemophilia as a heritable bleeding diathesis, the first models of coagulation, unproven attempts to treat the condition, the appearance of hemophilia in the royal families of Europe, and the discoveries that led to our modern conception of and treatment products for hemophilia.

Hemophilia in History II: Factor Concentrates and Foundations of Comprehensive Care includes discussion of the early development and evolution of clotting factor concentrates, the infectious disease contamination of the U.S. blood supply and its toll on the hemophilia community, as well as legislation that passed in the wake of the hepatitis and HIV epidemics. The activity also examines the hemophilia treatment center model of care. Finally, the module discusses the role of a safe blood supply, care from HTCs, and use of prophylactic therapy in prolonging life expectancy and enabling persons with hemophilia to lead increasingly normal lives.

Knowledge gained from these activities is expected to enhance compassion of hemophilia providers toward patients and to facilitate high quality care. Each module features an interactive timeline that allows you to explore the history of hemophilia at your own pace! You do not need to view both modules in order to earn continuing nursing professional development credit!

Three New CE Activities about Sickle Cell Disease | May 2020

PartnersPRN is pleased to announce the launch of three new modules about sickle cell disease (SCD).

The title of the modules are: Hydroxyurea for the Treatment of Sickle Cell Disease, Comprehensive Care of Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease, and Best Transition Practices for Adolescents and Young Adults with Sickle Cell Disease.

Nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other health care providers who treat persons with SCD or providers interested in learning more about SCD will find these modules beneficial.

CE Activity: School Nurse's Guide to Bleeding Disorders: Hemophilia | March 2020

This online learning activity targets school nurses, nurse practitioners, and other school personnel who require basic knowledge and skill to effectively practice and teach in schools attended by a student with hemophilia. This involves debunking common myths that persist about hemophilia and replacing those myths with factual information concerning the etiology, inheritance, severity, and treatment of hemophilia. It includes information on identifying prevalent locations and symptoms of bleeding in hemophilia. Finally, the activity reviews strategies that may be implemented in the school setting to promote a safe and positive learning environment for the student with hemophilia.

Nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinical staff within the federally recognized U.S. Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) are invited to participate in the 6-part online learning activity entitled Understanding Hemophilia to gain knowledge and develop expertise on the pathogenesis, inheritance, symptoms, potential complications, and clinical management of hemophilia. This activity is particularly appropriate for clinicians within their first six months of employment at an HTC.

New CE Activity: Aging with Hemophilia | November 2019

Nurses, social workers, and other members of the multidisciplinary comprehensive care team at U.S. federally recognized HTCs who routinely encounter adult PWH will want to participate in the online activity Psychosocial Considerations in Bleeding Disorders Care: Aging with Hemophilia. This activity will describe the increasing burden of chronic disease in elderly Americans and the role of extended life expectancy on prevalence of chronic conditions among elderly PWH. The activity assesses psychosocial considerations in managing care for elderly PWH and recommends practical assessment strategies for use in the Hemophilia Treatment Center environment to optimize care of these individuals.
