Purpose
The purpose of this activity is to enable learners, and Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) providers, to develop and advance Motivational Interviewing (MI) proficiency in the application of this approach in their daily clinical practice, through a highly experiential and interactive workshop.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be better able to:
- Differentiate the fundamental elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and current communication practices
- Facilitate patient engagement with Open Questions and Reflections
- Maintain focused conversations through collaboration with patients in clinical scenarios
- Cultivate patient change language in clinical scenarios
- Utilize evoking Influencers (Affirm, Collaborate, Emphasize autonomy [ACE]) in patient conversations
- Assess patient readiness for planning
- Plan change goals with patients
- Manage resistance with a collaborative and forward-focused approach
- Integrate MI skills in clinical practice
Target Audience
This accredited continuing education activity is designed for multidisciplinary patient-facing staff, including nurses, physical therapists, social workers, and other health care professionals who care for persons with bleeding and other coagulation disorders and have practiced for at least 6 months in a federally-recognized Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC).
Continuing Education
In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Partners in Bleeding Disorders Education Program. The University of Nebraska Medical Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
ANCC and ASWB ACE credits will be offered.
Eligibility Criteria
To attend this activity, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be employed at a U.S federally funded HTC in a bleeding disorder patient-facing role for a recommended six (6) months to one (1) year.
- Obtain approval to attend from the Regional Administrator via automated process upon submission of application.
Cost and Travel Information
There is no registration fee to attend this course.
Travel and lodging for activity participants are made possible by an at-will contribution from the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center.
